Sermon Notes & Study Guide
Pastor Westley L. Norris

This guide is designed to help you engage with today's message, reflect on the scripture, and apply what you've heard to your everyday life. Take notes, underline what stands out, and return to it throughout the week.
Opening
Where We Left Off
Last week we wrestled with this question: Have you ever caught yourself doing something you swore you would never do? We Unraveled that question — the fight we have with the generational things we inherit, the battles we don't necessarily choose, but genetically chose us.
"This Pastor wants to see God's People Set Free. Not a momentary freedom — but tarrying freedom that I read about in the Word of God. Story after story — someone, some people getting set free from something..."

Core Idea
Freedom Is More Than a Moment
One of the greatest misconceptions in church is that freedom is a moment. It is — but it is also much more.
An altar call
A prayer
An encounter
A breakthrough
A Sunday
It is all of those things. But freedom is bigger than a moment. Freedom is a lifestyle.
What We've Seen
  • People cry at the altar... then return to the same habits
  • People get set free and delivered... then rebuild the very thing God tore down
  • People break a cycle... then accidentally start another one
The Real Problem
Freedom isn't proven by what you leave.
Freedom is proven by what you build.
They know how to get out. But they don't know how to stay out. They know how to leave. But they don't know how to live.
And that's exactly where a guy named Peter finds himself in our text today.
FREE PEOPLE LIVE DIFFERENT
Look at the person next to you and tell them: "Don't go back." Tell the other person: "Live like you're free."

"The old me don't get another vote."
I can't fight a new way with my old mind. I can't get a new me with the old baggage.
Freedom is becoming somebody new.
There is no old Egypt in the new you. You came out — but did it come out of you?
You can't carry the fire of God and chains at the same time.
It ENDS WITH ME.

📝 Reflection
Which of these three statements hits home for you today? Why?

Main Scripture
John 21:1–19 (ESV)
Read through the passage slowly. Underline verses that stand out to you. Circle words you want to study further.
Verses 1–3: 1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Verses 4–8: 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, "Children, do you have any fish?" They answered him, "No." 6 He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
Verses 9–14: 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Verses 15–17: 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16 He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep."
Verses 18–19: 18 "Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go." 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, "Follow me."
Background
Setting the Scene
Jesus has been crucified. Jesus has risen. Peter had entered into the tomb and saw the linen cloths — and no Jesus.
When John 21 opens... Peter isn't preaching. Peter is fishing. Back where Jesus originally found him. Back to what was familiar. Back to what made sense. Back to what he knew before purpose.
If we are honest: Many of us have done the exact same thing.
When life gets difficult... we go back.
When healing gets uncomfortable... we go back.
When faith gets stretched... we go back.
Is that not what happened to Israel? They got uncomfortable in the new and wanted to go back.

📝 Personal Reflection
What "familiar place" do you keep returning to when life gets hard?

Point 1
John 21:3
Free People Don't Keep Going Back
"Simon Peter said to them, 'I am going fishing.'"
He followed Jesus and loved Jesus. But he doesn't see Jesus right now. Peter carries the guilt of denying Him — because inside of Peter was something he thought was ready, but it was still undone.
This is similar to us:
  • Going back to an ex
  • Going back to old patterns
  • Going back to old things, spaces, and places
Sometimes we go back because of guilt. Sometimes we go back because we don't see Jesus in a thing we think He is supposed to be in.
Peter basically says what some say today:
  • "I need to get high"
  • "I need a cigarette"
  • "I need a drink"
  • "I need something to take my mind off this"
Peter didn't say: "I am going to pray." He said: I am going to go my way, do my thing, that I know to do.
What old version of yourself keeps trying to come back? God can't build your future if you keep resurrecting your past.
They went out fishing for fish and didn't catch. Jesus instructs them on how to catch. They come to shore and Jesus is already there with a fire and fish already cooking. What we often go fishing for, Jesus already has.
Divine Supply
When we are with Jesus, there is provision beyond what we can manufacture on our own.
Divine Preparation
The fish and bread were already there. At His hand is already prepared what we need.
Divine Power
At His instruction there is abundance. They were fishing at the wrong side all along.

📝 Study Questions — Point 1
  1. Why do you think Peter went back to fishing after everything he experienced with Jesus?
  1. What does it mean that Jesus was already on the shore before Peter arrived?
  1. Where in your life might God already be waiting — even where you haven't looked?

Point 2
John 21:15–17
He Wants to Redefine You Too
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" ... "Feed my lambs." ... "Tend my sheep." ... "Feed my sheep."
Peter denied Jesus three times. Now Jesus asks Peter three questions. Not to shame him. Not to embarrass him. Not to expose him.
1
Three Denials
Peter's worst moment — the rooster crowed, his confidence shattered, his identity shaken.
2
Three Questions
"Do you love me?" — Jesus brings Peter through his failure, not back to it.
3
Three Opportunities
To heal. To move forward. To be restored. You may be on failure 1, 2, or 3.
Jesus never says: "Peter, explain yourself. Peter, defend yourself. Peter, justify yourself."
Instead He asks: "Do you love me?" Because Jesus wasn't interested in Peter's worst moment. Jesus was interested in Peter's next one.
Some people are still carrying names God never gave them:
Failure
Rejected
Damaged
Unqualified
Broken
Disqualified
But Jesus keeps calling you something greater. Freedom begins when God's voice becomes louder than your history. What Jesus restores, He redefines.
True freedom always produces purpose. Don't ask "God, based on my past — WHY ME?" in accusation. Ask it in a redeemed way — "God, based on my past — Why NOT ME?"

📝 Study Questions — Point 2
  1. Why do you think Jesus asked Peter the same question three times? What was He really restoring?
  1. What name has your past given you that God wants to replace?
  1. What would it look like for you to hear God's voice louder than your history this week?

Point 3
Free People Build What They Once Broke
Jesus told Peter: "Feed my sheep."
Jesus doesn't just forgive Peter. Jesus trusts Peter. Think about that.
1
The man who denied Him
2
The man who failed Him
3
The man who ran
4
The man who fell
Jesus says: Feed my sheep. Lead my people. Build my church. The goal was never simply getting Peter free from guilt. The goal was getting Peter back into purpose. Because freedom is not just about what leaves your life. Freedom is about what enters your life.
God frees us so we can build:
Build Healthy Families
We leave Egypt in Egypt. No chains — but Power.
Build Healthy Marriages
No chains — but Power. What God joins, He sustains.
Build Healthy Habits
No chains — but Power. It ENDS WITH ME.
Build Healthy Futures & Legacies
It ENDS WITH ME. The cycle stops here.
The strongest testimony isn't what God brought you out of. The strongest testimony is what God built after He brought you out.

📝 Study Questions — Point 3
  1. What does it mean that Jesus gave Peter a mission after his failure — not before he was "fixed"?
  1. In what area of your life is God calling you to build — not just to be free from?
  1. What does "It ENDS WITH ME" mean for your family or your community?

The Big Picture
Peter's Journey — and Yours
And that's the journey God wants for every person in this room.
Not just freedom from your past
Freedom for your future.
Not just freedom from chains
Freedom to build.
Not just freedom from guilt
Freedom to become.
Not just freedom from cycles
Freedom to live different.
Weekly Application
Take It Home This Week
This message isn't just for Sunday. Here are practical ways to carry today's truth into your week:
Re-read John 21:1–19 on your own
Read it slowly, once a day for the next 3 days. Let the story sink in. Ask: Where am I in this passage?
Write a "What I'm Building" list
Freedom isn't just about leaving — it's about building. Write down 3 things God is calling you to build in this season.
Share Point 1, 2, or 3 with someone
Pick one of the three points and tell someone what it meant to you. Speaking it out makes it real.
Declare the Final Declaration daily
Say it out loud — in the morning, in the mirror — every day this week. Words carry power.

Salvation Altar Call

Where are you today?
Not where you want people to think you are. Not where you used to be. But right now — where are you?
  • Are you carrying something you've never been able to put down — guilt, shame, a pattern you keep returning to?
  • Have you been trying to change your life through willpower alone, without ever truly surrendering it?
  • Is there a part of you that knows you need something more — something real — but you're not sure you deserve it?
